With Tyrael incapacitated and his party of Haradrim all but annihilated, Mathael is free to take the Black Soulstone putting his plan into action. Malthael was last seen after his disappearance following the events that led to the Worldstone being destroyed twenty years prior. They however are unsuccessful in this, the group is set upon by Malthael. With this knowledge in hand, Tyrael and six Horadrim take the Black Soulstone to Sanctuary where they attempt to hide it away from the prying hands of both the mortals, hoping it will never be found.
